We are accustomed to seeing diamonds as crystal clear gems in engagement rings and other jewelry. But, did you know that there are also be black diamonds known as carbonados?
Carbonados are minerals often referred to as black diamonds, but more accurately they are a polycrystalline or aggregate material of amorphous carbon, graphite, and diamond. They are also very rare.
This crystal is mostly used in industries and its name comes from the Portuguese word “burned” because its dark color resembles charcoal. The first carbonado was discovered in 1841 in Brazil and at first it was commonly used in France as a polishing material.
Carbonado Could come From Space
There is a belief that this mineral can’t be formed on Earth and came from outer space through a meteoritic impact.Unlike regular crystal diamonds, carbonados have never been found in igneous kimberlite rocks formed deep within the earth, like regular diamonds, but in alluvial sedimentary deposits.
Further evidence pointing to outer space origins is that carbonados show traces of nitrogen, hydrogen and osbornite which are often found in meteorites. This is also evident in the fact that the black diamond is porous, which isunlikely to happen if it were formed deep within the earth because gas wouldn’t have been able to stay trapped in the rock.
Another theory suggests that carbonados grew and sintered in the crust or mantle of the Earth which is a consequence of a radioactive ion implantation of carbon substrates.
Other theories claim that they could come from a subduction process; or that interstellar bodies that crashed with our planet brought this mineral with them.
Stephen Haggerty, a geologist from Florida International University in Miami, believes that carbonados came from a large, diamond-bearing asteroid that may have fallen to Earth billions of years ago. As a matter of fact, this mineral has been dated to be between 2.6 billion to 3.8 billion years old!
Can you imagine owning a black diamond ring knowing just how old it could be?
