May is the month that we celebrate Mother’s Day. Before our modern celebration of Mother’s Day, people in Ancient Greece had an annual spring festival to honor Rhea, the mother of the many Greek gods and goddesses. The power of mothers is especially evident when mothers are considered equal in status to goddesses! In Hinduism for instance, goddesses are often referred to as “Ma” which means mother.
Aside from the Ancient Greeks, Early Christians also allotted a special day to commemorate the Most Holy Mother, Mary. This was celebrated during the fourth Sunday of Lent and is recognized as the origin of the English celebration called “Mothering Sunday”. As years passed, this occasion also became the special day for all mothers. However, this celebration only lasted until the 19th century.
The modern Mother’s Day started in the US. In 1872, Julia Ward Howe, a famous activist, writer and poet, made a suggestion that June 2 should be the Mother’s Peace Day celebration for promoting peace. She even urged people, specifically mothers, to rise against war in her Mother’s Day Proclamation.
Aside from Howe, Anna Jarvis was also an advocate for a special day to honor mothers because she felt that Americans were neglecting their mothers. In line with her advocacy, Jarvis started to send carnations in church services to honor her mother. For her, the flower symbolized a mother’s pure love. Together with her supporters, Jarvis succeeded in getting President Woodrow Wilson to support the resolution that the second Sunday of May be recognized as Mother’s Day. Since then, the second Sunday of May is celebrated as Mother’s Day around the globe.
