Have you ever seen a rock shaped like a rose? Yes, it exists! It’s a mysterious rock formation in desert areas that can be found in very few places around the world. They are called Desert Roses or Rose Rocks.

The Desert Rock is the name given to rose-like formations of crystal clusters of gypsum or baryte that have abundant sand grains. They grow in shapes that resemble petals and because of that, they’ve been baptized as Rose Rocks.

The crystallization of Desert Roses is associated with environments with strong evaporation which are rich in sulfated waters. This water, which is dispersed in the sandy sediment, evaporates and precipitates gypsum in numerous crystals that intersect and grow between them.

The Legend Of The Desert Rose

The beauty and the uniqueness of the Desert Rose has inspired a legend that says that these "roses" formed from the tears of the Cherokee women and the blood of their men who were removed from the state of Georgia in the United States and taken to Oklahoma between the years 1838 and 1839.

Nevertheless, representatives of the Cherokee today don’t approve of this legend and state that Rose Rocks do not form on any of the lands granted to the Cherokees.

Magical Rose Rock Powers

As with any crystal, Rose Rocks also have special powers that we can use in to our advantage such as healing and creating a positive environment around us.

The Desert Rose is considered to have psychic powers. It stimulates the telepathic perception and it can be used for anxiety treatment, moderate passions, add sweetness to our lives, and also give us the strength to overcome tough situations. Some even use it in gem therapy sessions to treat depression and anger crisis.

Among other curative and spiritual properties, there are the following:

  • Qualities to overcome stress as well as nervous and mental diseases;

  • Pushes away negativity and resentments;

Where To Find It?

You can find Rose Rocks in Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, the United States, Mexico, Australia, and Namibia.

In the United States, Rose Rocks are more popular in the state of Oklahoma. These rocks were formed in this location during the Permian Period, 250 million years ago, when western and central Oklahoma was covered by a shallow sea.

After the sea in Oklahoma retreated, the baryte precipitated out of the water and crystallized around grains of quartz sand leaving large formation of reddish sandstone and creating the Rose Rocks.

In 1968, the state of Oklahoma named the Rose Rock as its official rock. The Rose Rock Museum, established at Noble, Oklahoma, in 1986, showcases original artwork that includes these rocks. Also, a Rose Rock Festival has been annually held in Noble.
